Going Deeper

Lately I’m finding a lot of deep exploration and learning is happening for me with the use of limitations. Limiting my palette is teaching me more about the range possible with each color. Painting the same subject or motif again and again allows me to explore mood variations of all kinds.

Constraints may seem like the last thing you’d want in a creative endeavor, but I think they’re actually beneficial. If you’ve ever stood before a blank canvas, or page, you know how it can feel to be immobilized by infinite possibilities. Restrictions reduce the choices, and with them, the paralysis. According to psychologists, when you have less to work with, you actually begin to see the world differently. Constraints force you to think! Your limitations are a starting point for seemingly endless creativity and possibility. Use them to your advantage.
