Peace of Mind

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue; sold

There have been many battles fought and won in the studio over the span of my forty years as an artist. A recent victory for which I am celebrating is in the conflict between subject matter and creative expression (the painting itself). I’m happy to report that a truce has been called and an agreement reached. This peaceful settlement means that color is no longer dictated by a photographic representation, but may have its own creative license. Edges will cease to be bound by the rules of actuality and may be determined by the mere swipe of a trowel. Shapes have a newfound liberty too…to evolve into whatever they need to be as dictated by the demands of the composition and the sensibility of the artist. Regarding truth, both sides agree that understanding begins with not accepting the world as it looks, but with feeling the essence of a thing.

The peace dividend is art that feels expressive and somehow familiar. It’s a maker who is happy in her studio and excited about the work at hand. With division and conflict all around us, it’s good to have a sanctuary somewhere. May there be peace in your creative world as well!
